Air New Zealand announced that their Economy Skynest sleep pods will go on sale starting May 18, 2026, for flights launching in November aboard their new 787-9 aircraft. Fittingly, the initial route is Auckland to New York JFK - a nearly 17 hour route that is among the longest in the world.

The Skynest concept has been in development for several years and was delayed from its original 2024 target. Let's take a look at this genuinely novel product.

What is Air New Zealand Skynest

The new offering consists of six lie-flat pods arranged in a bunk-style layout between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins. Each pod is 80 inches long and 23 inches wide, and a big improvement over the Skycouch's 49-inch surface that we covered in the United Relax Row post.

Passengers book an economy or premium economy seat as normal, then add-on four-hour pod usage on top. Two sessions are offered per flight initially, so a maximum of 12 passengers per flight can use the Skynest. Each passenger is limited to one session per flight. Sessions are timed around meal service and rotate at the same time to minimize disruptions.

Each pod comes equipped with a full-length mattress, fresh bedding changed between passengers, privacy curtain, personal ventilation, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, a reading light, and in-pod seatbelt for turbulence. There are no entertainment screens in the pods and if you want to watch something, headphones are required. Finally, a Nestcessities kit includes an eye mask, ear plugs, socks, and Aotea skincare.

Like travel on sleeper trains, the bottom berths will likely be among the most popular, avoiding a climb like upper berths.

    Sky Nest Pricing

The press release quotes 495 NZD per session. At current exchange rates, that's around $292 USD - not $495 USD, which some coverage reported. At roughly $75 per hour for a proper lie-flat surface on a 17-hour flight, it's not a terrible value proposition.

The pods sit between economy and premium economy pricing in a way that's never existed before. In many ways, Air New Zealand has effectively created a fourth product tier for their long-haul product offering.

    Some History: The Skycouch Lineage

Air New Zealand introduced the Skycouch in 2011 - a row of economy seats with leg rests that fold up to create a flat surface. United is launching a licensed version of the same concept in 2027, known as the Relax Row. The Skycouch's main limitation has always been length: at 49 inches it's fine for children and compact adults, genuinely short for anyone taller.

    What's Next

Air New Zealand plans to retrofit existing 787-9s with Skynests over time, though the timeline beyond the initial new aircraft delivery is to be confirmed. The 777-300ER fleet is not planned for Skynest installation.
