The Walk Through O'Hare
After landing in Chicago from San Diego on Alaska, the walk to K20 was a proper O'Hare transit experience. I passed AA's Astrojet livery a second time since my arrival along with AA's newer American Eagle heritage aircraft sitting at a neighboring gate.

Three McDonald's and two Nuts on Clark locations later, I was at the K gates. K20 sits at the end of the K concourse pier, which meant another narrow boarding situation. A (delayed) British Airways departure was loading at the adjacent gate. On a side note, I did get to see some of BA's new ground taxi pilots which are responsible for moving the aircraft over from the international terminal.
The Aircraft
Tonight's aircraft was operated by N821AW, a 25 year old A319 originally operated by America West. There's no seatback IFE on this registration — that hardware has been removed. In its place is AA's streaming entertainment and free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members.
First class runs eight seats, which we've covered at length in the context of the A319 — small cabin, competitive upgrade list, the buy-up being the right call here rather than riding the upgrade list on a last departure of the day. The trip preview laid out the reasoning, and it held up. Of course this is starting to change with AA adding an extra row of first class to these aircraft.

One thing worth noting on this configuration: a full bulkhead sits behind the second row of first class. On a late flight when you want to recline without worrying about those behind, these are the seats to target. This is much better than AA's newer narrowbody aircraft which lack the divider between the rear of first class and economy.

Service
Service began with a full choice of pre-departure beverages. After reaching cruise altitude a second beverage service came through alongside a snack basket. That's the full service on this route now. Interestingly enough ORD–DCA used to be one of AA's exception routes with hot meal service in first class. Unfortunately those days are gone. The snack basket gets the job done, but it's tough for anyone who remembers what this route used to offer pre-Covid.

Credit to the flight attendant for making a second pass through the cabin and keeping drinks topped off without being asked.
Wi-Fi
AA's free Wi-Fi continues to deliver. Speedtest registered just under 100 Mbps of download. Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members continues to be one of the more underrated improvements to American's domestic product.

Arrival
The Potomac River approach into DCA at night is a great domestic arrival experience. Just make sure to be sitting on the left side of the aircraft. Excuse the poor quality photo of the National Mall.

We touched down 21 minutes early and our gate was available, which isn't always the case. All in all it was a smooth arrival into DCA.
Wrapping Up the San Diego Trip
This flight was the right ending to a trip that was built almost entirely from last minute deals — playing the upgrade game with a $130 Alaska fare, an AAdvantage hotels rate that earned back the miles for an award ticket, an economical Alaska fare home through Chicago, and a AAdvantage award ticket with a $40 buy-up to close out the trip in first class. While the Alma hotel was a disappointment, the tacos were phenomenal, and the Chase Sapphire Lounge at SAN was solid. The full series is below if you want to follow it from the beginning.
