Can't Pick Seats on Your Iberia Award? It's Probably the 330-Day Window.
Booked an Iberia partner award and can't select seats? It's probably not a broken booking. Iberia allows seat selection within 330 days of departure.
I ran into a situation recently that's worth sharing for anyone who books Iberia partner awards far in advance. I booked an Iberia flight using AAdvantage miles, went to select seats, and nothing worked. Iberia's website threw an error and wouldn't even show seat selection at all.
I tried pulling up the booking on BA.com using the oneworld interoperability trick we covered previously. Every seat showed as blocked. Not ideal!
Turns out there was nothing to worry about.

The Fix: Wait for the 330-Day Window
Based off what I experienced, Iberia doesn't allow seat selection more than 330 days before departure. The booking is fine - just the seat inventory just doesn't open up for passenger selection until you're within that window. Any attempt to select seats before 330 days out will either fail with an error or show all seats as unavailable/blocked.
Once inside the 330-day window, seat selection opens up normally through Iberia's website or app. No calling required or workaround needed.
Why This Matters
Booking award tickets far in advance is generally the smart move - availability is usually best at the beginning of the booking window (typically 330-355 days out depending on the program) and gets tighter as dates fill in. But if you're booking a partner award on Iberia at the very outer edge of the booking window, expect that you won't be able to pick your seat immediately.
Be sure to set a reminder to circle back once you're inside the 330-day window and take care of seat selection then.

What Wasn't the Problem
I'll list what didn't work, so nobody else wastes time trying:
- Iberia's own website/app: Threw an error every time
- BA.com management portal: All seats showed as blocked
- Qatar Airways management portal: Same issue
- AA.com: Standard "seat selection not available for this booking" message
All of it was just a symptom of the same underlying reason: Iberia hadn't opened seat inventory yet because departure was too far out.
The Broader Lesson
This is one of those airline quirks that you learn with time. It only surfaces when you run into it and it's easy to assume something is wrong with your booking - especially when it's made via a partner. If you've booked an Iberia partner award and can't select seats, check the calendar first. If you're outside 330 days from departure, that's almost certainly why.
