Iberia Just Opened a oneworld Emerald-Exclusive Lounge in Madrid

Iberia officially opened the Emerald Lounge Sorolla at Madrid-Barajas Terminal 4 on September 9. It's an 800 square meter space designed exclusively for oneworld Emerald members and Iberia's top-tier status members.

Iberia has officially opened a new premium lounge at Madrid-Barajas that's exclusive to oneworld Emerald members and Iberia's top-tier elites. Named Emerald Lounge Sorolla - after the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla - the space opened September 9, 2026. It's located in Terminal 4 next to the existing Dalí Lounge and is one of the more notable Iberia announcements of the year.

The Space

At 800 square meters accommodating up to 128 guests, the lounge is intimate. But that's intentional - the design prioritizes personalized service and quiet spaces versus some of the busier business class lounges offered by most airlines. The layout is quite private in some ways with a reception that opens onto a casual work/dining area and the main lounge spaces beyond.

Amenities include:

• Buffet plus table service for menu items pulled from the buffet options
• Welcome drink on arrival (very Flagship lounge like)
• A staffed bar with hand-crafted cocktails - a full 360 degree bbar rather than a self-serve setup
• Coffee machines
• Two Nap pods towards the rear of the lounge
• Showers
• Lockers

The food program leans into Spanish specialties. Breakfast covers homemade pastries, a variety of breads, tomato-rubbed toast, hot dishes prepared to order, smoothies, yogurts, and vegan options. This is a step up from the standard Dalí and Velázquez lounge food.

Based off early videos, it looks like a phenomenal addition to Iberia's ground service.

Who Can Access It

The access threshold is higher than Iberia's current lounge network.

Eligible passengers must:

• Hold oneworld Emerald status OR one of Iberia's top-tier status levels (Platino, Platino Prime, Infinita, Infinita Prime, or Singular)
• Be departing on a oneworld marketed and operated flight
• Depart from gates H, J, K, or M (Schengen area of Terminal 4.) More on that below.

Guest policies:

• oneworld Emerald members: 1 guest
• Iberia Infinita Prime members: 4 guests
• Iberia Emerald members can additionally bring their children traveling on the same flight without counting toward guest limits

The notable exclusion: No access is provided for departures from Terminal 4S non-Schengen S gates. So if you're connecting through Madrid and departing on a non-Schengen international flight, this lounge is not accessible to you.

That last point is worth noting. Many oneworld Emerald US travelers routing through Madrid do so on long-haul flights that depart from T4S, not from H/J/K/M in the main part of T4. If you're on a US-Madrid-onward routing where the onward leg is intercontinental (like Latin America), this new Emerald Lounge Sorolla won't be available.

For US travelers on Madrid-Europe short-haul routings - or Madrid to another European city on Iberia or a partner - it works.

Why This Is a Big Deal

Iberia is joining a small but growing club of airlines that operate dedicated lounges specifically for oneworld Emerald members. Finnair has a well-regarded oneworld Emerald lounge in Helsinki known as the Platinum Wing. Cathay Pacific has The Wing First Class lounges in Hong Kong, London, and other cities. Now Iberia has Emerald Lounge Sorolla at Madrid.

For oneworld Emerald members flying Iberia or partner short-haul from Madrid, this is a solid upgrade to the ground experience.

The Bigger Picture

Iberia is turning 100 years old in 2027, and this feels like part of a broader premium repositioning tied to that milestone. The recent Iberia menu refresh covered improved dining across all cabins and now there's a dedicated Emerald lounge.

Combined with Iberia's already-strong AAdvantage award value - 57,500 miles for business class to Madrid with modest taxes - the ground experience is getting even better.

My Take

I'll be passing through Madrid next year and I'm excited to swing by the Emerald Lounge Sorolla.

For anyone with oneworld Emerald status transiting Madrid on a Schengen departure, this should be a great excuse to arrive to MAD early. Keep an eye out for a full review later next year.
