How JetBlue’s BlueFirst Upgrades Will Work
JetBlue announced the details on how BlueFirst upgrades will work for Mosaic members and Premier Cardmembers. Here's the full breakdown of priority and limits.
With BlueFirst - JetBlue’s new domestic First Class product — launching soon, JetBlue just published the mechanics of how upgrades will work for TrueBlue members. The system borrows a lot from how legacy carriers handle complimentary upgrades, but with a few JetBlue-specific details worth knowing.
If you’re a Mosaic member or JetBlue Premier Cardmember and curious about your BlueFirst upgrade eligibility, here’s the full breakdown.

What Space-Available Upgrades Are
Space-available upgrades are complimentary upgrades to the BlueFirst cabin for eligible TrueBlue members. No points, cash, or certificates are required. Upgrades begin processing 60 minutes before departure in a specific upgrade order.
Here’s a quick rundown of how this works:
- Book an eligible fare on a BlueFirst-equipped flight
- You’ll be automatically added to the upgrade list
- Upgrades clear starting 60 minutes before departure based on priority (more on that below)
- If upgraded, you get notified in the JetBlue app and by email and your boarding pass will upgrade.
Who’s Eligible
Two groups qualify for space-available upgrades on JetBlue:
Mosaic members (all tiers):
- Mosaic 1
- Mosaic 2
- Mosaic 3
- Mosaic 4
JetBlue Premier Cardmembers:
- If you’ve paid for the itinerary with the Premier Card
- Includes authorized users
- Eligible with or without Mosaic status
That second category is interesting. JetBlue is essentially letting the Premier Card unlock upgrade eligibility (if the card is used to pay for the flight.) For heavy JetBlue flyers who don’t quite reach Mosaic, this is a pretty cool path for upgrades on any non elite heavy flights.

Eligible Fares
Qualifying fares:
- Main
- Main Flex
- EvenMore
- EvenMore Flex
Not qualifying:
- Main Base
- EvenMore Base
Bookings with TrueBlue points or Cash + Points on eligible fare classes also qualify. Points redemptions aren’t excluded from the upgrade pool.
The Priority System
Here’s where it gets specific. Upgrades to BlueFirst will clear in this order:
| Priority | Group |
|---|---|
| 1 | Mosaic 4 |
| 2 | Mosaic 3 |
| 3 | Mosaic 2 |
| 4 | Mosaic 1 |
| 5 | JetBlue Premier Cardmembers without Mosaic status |
Within each tier, further priority is determined by:
- Using a JetBlue Credit Card to pay for the trip (highest sub-priority)
- Purchase of an EvenMore fare (not EvenMore Base)
- Tiles earned during the current program year
So a Mosaic 2 member paying with their Premier Card and flying on an EvenMore fare will clear before a Mosaic 2 member who used a different payment method and flew Main.
If you’re only a JetBlue Premier Cardmember, you have a much more uphill battle in terms of scoring a complimentary upgrade.

The Companion Rules
Besides upgrades based off cobranded credit cards, the companion rules is where JetBlue gets interesting.
You and ONE companion on the same reservation are eligible. Both get upgraded only if two BlueFirst seats are available when upgrades start to clear.
Reservations with 3+ travelers are NOT eligible. If you’re traveling with family of three or more on one reservation, nobody gets upgrade consideration unless you break your booking into separate reservations before check-in.
When only one seat is available:
- You can take the upgrade yourself
- You can give the upgrade to your companion
- You can skip the upgrade and remain together

What’s NOT Included in Space-Available Upgrades
No pre-flight BlueFirst benefits. If you’re upgraded via space-available, you get the seat and onboard service, you won’t get:
- Dedicated BlueFirst check-in
- Increased baggage allowance
- Any other pre-flight benefits reserved for paid BlueFirst customers
If those benefits matter to you, buying BlueFirst directly is the only way to get them.
No carryover to connecting flights. If you get upgraded on your first flight but have a connection, you don’t automatically get upgraded on the next segment. You need to clear each segment’s upgrade list separately.
Voluntary changes forfeit the upgrade. If you Same-Day Switch after an upgrade clears, you lose it.
Points and Tiles Earning + Fare Rules
You earn points and tiles on the original fare you purchased, not the BlueFirst fare. So a Main Flex fare upgraded to BlueFirst still earns at Main Flex rates.
The original fare rules also continue to apply (change and cancellation policies).
What About Mint Flights?
Space-available upgrades don’t apply to Mint flights. If you want to upgrade on a Mint route, you’ll need to:
- Purchase a Mint fare directly
- Use Premium Upgrade Certificates (available to higher-tier Mosaic members)
As of now Mint upgrades won’t happen via the space-available system.
What About Partner Flights?
Only JetBlue-operated flights with BlueFirst qualify. JetBlue-marketed flights operated by partner airlines are not eligible for space-available upgrades.
United MileagePlus Status Doesn’t Help
Despite the recent JetBlue-United Blue Sky partnership, United MileagePlus Premier status does NOT qualify for space-available upgrades on JetBlue. This is explicitly called out in the terms and conditions.
While Blue Sky reciprocal benefits are substantial, they don’t extend to BlueFirst upgrade priority. This will be a JetBlue-member-only privilege.
Bottom Line
JetBlue is implementing a reasonable, well-thought-out upgrade system for BlueFirst that treats their most loyal members best while still giving Premier Cardmembers an interesting path to upgrade eligibility.
If BlueFirst becomes available on your routes and you’re a Mosaic member or Premier Cardmember, upgrades will be a real possibility as the product rolls out. Just remember that priority is tiered and there are certain limits that apply.
