Philippine Airlines Joins oneworld: What It Means
Philippine Airlines is joining oneworld in 2027 — 31 new destinations, AAdvantage redemptions to Manila incoming, and a window to book before demand spikes.
PAL signed an agreement to join the oneworld alliance on June 6 at the IATA Annual General Meeting. Full membership is expected in 2027. Here's what changes for status holders, award travelers, and anyone trying to get to the Philippines on points.
Philippine Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding to become oneworld's 16th member on June 6 at the IATA Annual General Meeting. American Airlines had filed to codeshare with PAL back in 2020 — a move that looked like a precursor to oneworld membership even then. The pandemic pushed things back.
But that wasn't the end — Alaska added PAL as a partner last year. Qatar formalized a partnership in May. It's fair to say this formal announcement wasn't entirely a surprise. Full integration into the alliance is expected in 2027.
What PAL Adds to oneworld
Philippine Airlines brings 31 destinations into the alliance network — most of them previously unreachable through any oneworld airline. PAL also has solid international coverage with a presence in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sydney, Melbourne, and the Middle East.
What It Means for oneworld Status Holders
Once full membership goes live in 2027, your AAdvantage or Alaska Atmos status will travel with you on Philippine Airlines like it does on any other oneworld member.
Here's what that looks like in practice for American AAdvantage members for instance:
- AAdvantage Gold (oneworld Ruby): Priority check-in, preferred seating, standby priority on PAL flights
- Platinum / Platinum Pro (oneworld Sapphire): Everything above plus lounge access, priority boarding, extra baggage, priority bag handling
- Executive Platinum (oneworld Emerald): Everything Sapphire gets plus expedited security
Alaska Atmos members map the same way through their respective oneworld tiers. MVP Gold gets you Sapphire-level benefits, MVP Gold 75K gets you Emerald. That means lounge access at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport, priority boarding, and generous baggage allowance.
It's important to remember that none of this is live yet with full integration expected in 2027. But it's worth knowing what's coming, especially if the Philippines is on your travel list.

The Award Booking Window
Here's what's worth paying attention to right now.
AAdvantage doesn't have PAL redemptions live... yet. That comes with full membership in 2027. But Alaska Mileage Plan already has PAL as a partner, which means Alaska miles to Manila and beyond are bookable today. Award availability on PAL has historically been good because so few programs could access it.
Once full oneworld integration opens up AAdvantage, Avios, Qantas Points, and every other alliance program to PAL inventory pretty near simultaneously. If you're paying attention, you may have some opportunities to get in on some newly opened award flight inventory.
The Bigger Picture
oneworld is already a strong alliance with members like American, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways all in one place. Recent additions like Alaska have only strengthened the network. Adding Philippine Airlines fills one of the more notable geographic gaps the alliance had.
From a pure frequent flyer standpoint, more oneworld members means more places to earn and burn miles, more lounge access on more routes, and more reciprocal status recognition. That's always a good thing.
For now, watch for AAdvantage and other award programs to announce PAL redemptions as 2027 approaches.
