United MileagePlus 2026 Updates — What's Changing and What It Means for You
A full breakdown of United MileagePlus program changes in 2026: PQP earning updates, partner changes, award pricing, and what Premier members need to know.
United Airlines has rolled out major updates to the MileagePlus® program, effective April 2, 2026. The changes affect how miles are earned on United-operated flights, what Basic Economy passengers receive, and introduce new award booking discounts for cardholders.
If you're thinking ahead to earning or maintaining United status, these updates are significant — especially if you hold a United co-branded credit card.
Full details are available on United's official announcement page.

Beginning April 2, MileagePlus members earn miles at new rates on tickets booked and operated on eligible United flights. Earnings are based on the eligible fare paid.
Standard Earning (Without a United Credit Card)
| Status | Miles Per Dollar |
|---|---|
| General Member | 3 |
| Premier Silver | 5 |
| Premier Gold | 6 |
| Premier Platinum | 7 |
| Premier 1K | 9 |
Cardmember Earning Rates
Eligible primary United Cardmembers unlock higher earn rates. Note: The United MileagePlus® Debit Rewards Card and United Gateway℠ Card require $10,000 in annual card spending to unlock these rates.
| Status | Miles Per Dollar |
|---|---|
| General Member | 6 |
| Premier Silver | 8 |
| Premier Gold | 9 |
| Premier Platinum | 10 |
| Premier 1K | 12 |
Members can earn up to 75,000 miles per ticket, excluding promotional bonuses.
Even Higher Earnings When Paying With United Cards
United is also increasing mileage earning for those who pay for their ticket with certain co-branded cards. The total miles per dollar below represent the full earning stack when using your United card at checkout.
United Explorer Card
| Status | Total Miles Per Dollar |
|---|---|
| General Member | 9 |
| Premier Silver | 11 |
| Premier Gold | 12 |
| Premier Platinum | 13 |
| Premier 1K | 15 |
United Quest Card
| Status | Total Miles Per Dollar |
|---|---|
| General Member | 10 |
| Premier Silver | 12 |
| Premier Gold | 13 |
| Premier Platinum | 14 |
| Premier 1K | 16 |
United Club Card
| Status | Total Miles Per Dollar |
|---|---|
| General Member | 11 |
| Premier Silver | 13 |
| Premier Gold | 14 |
| Premier Platinum | 15 |
| Premier 1K | 17 |
The Premier 1K + United Club combination (17 miles per dollar) is now one of the highest earning rates available on a U.S. airline program for purchased tickets. It will be interesting to see whether this shifts purchase behavior for travelers who currently use Chase or American Express cards for airline spending.
Basic Economy Earn Rates Are Changing
Basic Economy accrual is being reduced for many members under the new structure.
| Status | Basic Economy Earn Rate |
|---|---|
| General Member (no card) | Not eligible (0 miles) |
| Premier Silver | 2 miles per dollar |
| Premier Gold | 3 miles per dollar |
| Premier Platinum | 4 miles per dollar |
| Premier 1K | 6 miles per dollar |
Cardmembers earn slightly higher rates on Basic Economy fares, but this fare class continues to become less attractive for mileage accumulation — particularly for General Members who don't hold a United card. If you're a General Member and maximizing miles matters, avoiding Basic Economy after April 2 is worth factoring into your booking decisions.
New Award Booking Discounts
United is introducing new mileage discounts for award bookings:
- At least 10% savings on award tickets for United Cardmembers
- At least 15% savings for Premier members who also hold an eligible United card
These discounts apply to United and United Express award flights. They cannot be combined with Money + Miles itineraries.
This follows a growing trend of airlines providing better award value for certain customer segments. For cardholders who were already booking awards regularly, this is a meaningful perk stacked on top of the improved earn rates.
Model Your MileagePlus Earnings with Milesmate
We've updated our United PQP Calculator to reflect the 2026 MileagePlus earning changes, so you can model earning scenarios across status levels and card combinations.
Use it to compare how many miles you'd earn at different status tiers, with or without a United card — and whether the $10,000 card spend threshold is worth hitting for your travel volume.
The Takeaway
The April 2, 2026 changes make holding a United co-branded credit card significantly more valuable for MileagePlus members. The gap between standard and Cardmember earn rates is wide — and the new award booking discounts add another layer of value for cardholders.
Key things to keep in mind:
- If you hold the United Gateway℠ or MileagePlus® Debit Rewards Card, note the $10,000 annual spend threshold to unlock Cardmember rates — a higher bar than most travel cards
- Basic Economy fares are getting materially worse for General Members: 0 miles earned without a qualifying card after April 2
- The per-ticket cap of 75,000 miles won't affect most travelers, but is worth knowing if you're booking expensive international business class fares
- Award booking discounts only apply to United and United Express flights — not partners
For most frequent United flyers, these changes reward engagement with the ecosystem. If you're flying United regularly, a co-branded card now pays off in multiple ways: higher earn rates, award discounts, and (for premium cards) lounge access.
