American Airlines just announced a 40,000+ sq ft Admirals Club at CLT - now the largest in the network. Long overdue upgrade to one of AA's busiest hubs.

American Airlines just announced a 40,000+ square foot Admirals Club at Charlotte Douglas, which will become the largest in the entire AA network when it opens. CLT has long been one of the most crowded hub lounge experiences in the country - this is a long overdue upgrade.

American Airlines just announced plans for a 40,000+ square foot Admirals Club at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), which will become the largest lounge in AA's global network when it opens. The announcement follows last year's commitment to increase lounge space at CLT, including the airport's first-ever Flagship Lounge.

For anyone who's flown through CLT regularly, this is genuinely overdue. Here's what's coming and why it matters.

    The CLT Lounge Problem

CLT is American Airlines' second-largest hub, connecting millions of passengers to more than 180 destinations. Despite handling over 650 peak daily flights, CLT has consistently been one of the more challenging AA lounge experiences in the network. The existing Admirals Clubs - in Concourse B, Concourse C/D, and the Provisions by Admirals Club near Gate A1 - have been persistently crowded, with wait times and limited seating being common complaints.

That's why things like Provisions were added in the first place. The grab-and-go concept lounges that AA rolled out at JFK and CLT were specifically designed to get members in and out quickly to help manage overcrowding at the main Admirals Clubs.

The underlying problem - not enough lounge space for the volume of eligible members connecting through CLT - hasn't really been solved though. Until now.

    The New Lounge Details

    The new Admirals Club will:

    • Span more than 40,000 square feet at completion
    • Be located in the airport's atrium on the mezzanine level
    • Offer expansive views of the concourse below
    • Feature spa-style shower suites, bars and serveries, and multiple zones for different traveler needs
    • Draw design inspiration from Charlotte's tree canopy, textile heritage, and southern charm

Construction begins this year with the existing Admirals Clubs and Provisions remaining open throughout the construction period. The design language follows that seen in more recent additions to the Admirals club network, such as those in LGA and DEN.

That 40,000 square foot number is noteworthy for one specific reason: it surpasses the 37,000 square foot DFW lounge that AA announced earlier this year, which was itself positioned as the largest lounge in the network. CLT now claims that title instead.

CLT Was Also One of the Last AA Hubs Without a Flagship Lounge

The other piece of this story is that CLT is one of the few AA hubs that doesn't yet have a Flagship Lounge. Flagship Lounges are AA's premium lounge tier - available to Flagship Business and Flagship First passengers, with the recent Flagship Dining expansion that opened the sit-down restaurant experience to all Flagship Business ticketed customers.

Philadelphia (PHL) recently got a Flagship Lounge. CLT remained one of the gap hubs.

With this announcement, AA is addressing both pieces of the CLT premium ground experience problem - a massive new Admirals Club for status members and the airline's first Flagship Lounge at CLT for premium cabin passengers.

    Access Requirements

Admirals Club access at CLT (and across the network) is available through:

    • Admirals Club membership (paid)
    • Qualifying oneworld status (Sapphire and Emerald)
    • Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard cardholders
    • Citi/AAdvantage Globe Mastercard cardholders can use one of four Admirals Club Globe passes annually
    • One-Day Pass for $79 or 7,900 AAdvantage miles

    My Take

I typically avoid flying through CLT when I can route elsewhere, in large part because of the lounge situation. This announcement might change that calculation. A 40,000+ square foot Admirals Club, combined with the planned Flagship Lounge, will make CLT a much better connection experience rather than something to actively avoid.

The timing matters though. These are ambitious projects. The CLT work starts this year but the full completion timeline hasn't been specified. Realistically, we're looking at the current overcrowded lounges staying that way for at least a couple more years before the new spaces open up.

The bigger question is whether 40,000 square feet is actually enough for CLT's volume.

CLT handles enormous connecting passenger numbers, and even the largest lounge in the network could still feel crowded if demand continues to grow faster than lounge capacity. We've seen this at other hub lounges where "largest in network" didn't translate to a comfortable experience during peak times.

Fingers crossed that the design and capacity planning account for CLT's traffic numbers.

The Pattern Across AA's Premium Push

Add this to the growing list of premium investments AA has announced in 2026:

AA is making significant investments in the premium ground experience across virtually every major hub. It’s well over due.

    Bottom Line

This is a significant upgrade to one of AA's most important and traditionally underserved hubs. The 40,000+ square foot Admirals Club will claim the title of largest in the AA network, and the accompanying Flagship Lounge will close a big gap in AA's premium ground network.

If you fly through CLT regularly - like millions of AA passengers do - this is a major improvement that's coming. Just be prepared for the current crowded experience to continue for a while longer before the new spaces open.

I might finally start considering CLT connections again once this is all built.
