American Airlines received its first E175 with new RECARO seats from Embraer. Slimmer profile, more knee room, closer to the E2 experience. Great news.

Embraer delivered the first E175 with new RECARO passenger seats to American Airlines. Slimmer profile, more knee room, better aesthetics. For anyone who flies regional AA routes, this is a significant upgrade to one of AA’s most important aircraft.

Embraer announced today that American Airlines has received its first E175 equipped with new-generation RECARO passenger seats. This is a quiet but meaningful upgrade to one of AA’s most important aircraft (and genuinely one of my favorite aircraft in the fleet.)

Here’s what’s changing and why it matters.

    The E175 Is Underrated

Let’s start with context on why the E175 matters so much to AA. The E175 is a 76-seat regional jet operated by various regional partners under the American Eagle brand. It’s used for:

    • Short-haul routes between hub-and-spoke pairs
    • Low-density routes where mainline aircraft would be oversized
    • Markets where regional jet economics work better than larger aircraft

AA has one of the largest E175 fleets in North America, and the aircraft handles a substantial portion of their short-haul and regional flying. If you fly AA regularly for shorter trips — particularly to secondary cities — you’ve been on an E175 many times.

For passengers, the E175 is generally one of the better regional jet experiences. The 2-2 configuration in economy means no middle seats. In First Class, a 1-2 configuration is offered meaning some passengers get both window and aisle access in their own row. And most importantly, the operational performance is quite reliable.

    The New Seats

RECARO’s new-generation seats bring several improvements:

    • A Contemporary slimline profile that maximizes personal space and knee room
    • Cushion comfort maintained despite the slimmer profile
    • More durable materials designed for the high usage regional jets see
    • Human-centric ergonomics optimized for passenger comfort on shorter flights

The slim profile is particularly interesting because it typically allows for either tighter seat pitch (more seats, worse for passengers) or the same pitch (same number of seats, better experience). AA appears to be using the technology for “good” rather than squeeze more seats in as the aircraft retains its 76-seat configuration.

Note upgrades not traditionally seen on aircraft of this size, like dedicated beverage and device holders.

    Why This Matters

A few reasons this announcement is more significant than it might appear on surface:

    • AA is the first. American Airlines is the first US airline to introduce RECARO seats on E175 aircraft.
    • It’s an experiential upgrade. Regional jets have historically been the weak link in US airline cabin experience. Upgrading the seats brings the regional experience closer to mainline standards.
    • It’s part of a bigger pattern. This fits with AA’s broader cabin modernization push, Flagship Dining expansion, and Starlink Wi-Fi rollout across the fleet. The regional fleet is finally getting its share of the premium experience investments.
    • Comfort really matters on regional flying. Many AA passengers fly 1-3 hour segments on E175s. Having legitimately comfortable seats for those routes is a real quality-of-life improvement.

While this aircraft still has some weak points - like the cold catering of meal boxes versus ovens for hot meals - it’s still one of my favorites.

    What AA Said

Rhonda Crawford, AA’s Senior VP of Customer Experience Design and Strategy, framed the announcement in the context of broader AA experience improvements:

“As the first U.S. airline to introduce RECARO seats on Embraer E175 aircraft, we’re continuing to raise the bar for regional travel. Our goal is to deliver the elevated experience customers want, while creating greater consistency across the American travel experience.”

    The Bigger Picture

Embraer is actively investing in E175 modernization because the aircraft remains the backbone of regional aviation in North America. By bringing the main cabin environment closer to the E2 family (Embraer’s newer generation of regional jets), the enhancements help the E175 remain competitive with newer alternatives.

For AA passengers specifically, this means:

    • Regional flights will feel more confortable.
    • The product gap between mainline and regional narrows.
    • AA is competing on experience. Not just hard product on mainline, but across the entire fleet.

    When You’ll Experience This

The first aircraft is now delivered. The full fleet rollout will happen over time as new E175s are delivered and existing airframes come due for cabin refreshes.

Check the aircraft registration if you want to know whether you’ll be on one of the newer E175s before you book. Embraer and AA aren’t typically publicizing specific tail numbers, but aviation enthusiasts and regular flyers tend to figure it out quickly especially on sites like FlyerTal.

    My Take

I’ve enjoyed flying AA E175s for years. The aircraft hits a nice balance of being modern enough to feel comfortable while being right-sized for the routes it serves. Adding better seats is a welcome enhancement.

Keep an eye out for the new seats on your next AA regional segment.
