    2028

Hawaiian Airlines announced Leihōkū Suites, a new lie-flat business class product coming to their entire A330 fleet in 2028. Along with it comes a full cabin refresh from front row to last, new Premium Economy seating, and a 13,000 sq ft lounge in Honolulu.

Alongside Alaska's Aurora announcement, Hawaiian Airlines dropped an equally significant announcement today about its own premium direction. Leihōkū Suites - a new lie-flat business class product for Hawaiian's A330 fleet - headlines a comprehensive cabin refresh that will roll out across all 24 A330 aircraft starting in 2028.

So what’s in the name? The name Leihōkū translates to "lei of stars" and draws inspiration from Polynesian navigation and wayfinding. Let’s take a closer look at the product.

    Meet the Leihōkū Suites

The A330 will get 22 Leihōkū Suites per aircraft, which represents an increase from Hawaiian's current business class capacity. Here's what each suite includes:

    • Direct aisle access
    • Lie-flat seating
    • Privacy doors
    • A 19-inch 4K entertainment screen
    • Bluetooth connectivity for headphones
    • Wireless and USB-C charging plus AC power
    • Hotel-quality bedding
    • Enhanced onboard amenities
    • Free Starlink Wi-Fi for Atmos Rewards members

The design draws on Hawaiian's cultural identity with warm wood tones, natural textures, and other design elements. Based off renderings, this new cabin looks quite slick.

    It's a Full A330 Cabin Refresh

This isn't just a business class update. Hawaiian is refreshing the entire A330 cabin from the front row to the last. That includes:

    • All new interiors throughout the aircraft
    • An upgraded inflight entertainment system with 4K screens in every cabin
    • Bluetooth connectivity at every seat
    • Premium Reserve - their new premium economy cabin (more below)

By the time the refresh is complete, Hawaiian's A330 will feature approximately 40% premium seating, up from 30% today. That's a significant shift toward premium capacity on their long-haul workhorse and follows the trends we’re seeing with other US based airlines.

    The Route Network Context

Hawaiian's A330 fleet handles the airline's longest routes including Asia, Oceania, and some premium North American routes. International destinations include:

    • Tokyo Haneda and Narita (Japan)
    • Seoul Incheon (Korea)
    • Sydney and Auckland (Australia and New Zealand)
    • Papeete (French Polynesia)
    • Rarotonga (Cook Islands)
    • Pago Pago (American Samoa)

The aircraft also appears on premium continental US routes from Honolulu to places like Boston (BOS), New York (JFK), and Los Angeles (LAX).

Premium Reserve (Premium Economy) Comes to the A330

Alongside Leihōkū Suites, the A330 will get 28 Premium Reserve seats - the new premium economy cabin that's rolling out across both Alaska's 787s and select 737-10 MAX aircraft, and now Hawaiian's A330s.

Premium Reserve on the A330 will feature:

    • 38 inches of pitch
    • Wider seats than traditional economy
    • Enhanced recline plus leg and calf rest
    • Large tray tables
    • A 16-inch 4K OLED entertainment screen
    • AC power and USB-C at every seat
    • Upgraded dining and amenities

    The Dining Program

Alaska and Hawaiian's food and beverage program is one of the strongest brand differentiators the airline has. Executive Chef Dell Valdez will lead menus for Leihōkū Suites and First Class, with dishes inspired by local Hawaiian ingredients and culinary traditions.

Notably, Hawaiian also launched a chef-driven Main Cabin pre-order dining program this summer on flights between Hawai'i and the US continent. This gives Main Cabin passengers more choice and brings more local flavors onboard.

    New Honolulu Lounge

Only adding to the excitement is that Hawaiian is opening a new 13,000 sq ft lounge at the entrance of the Mauka Concourse in Honolulu Terminal 1 in early 2028. The space will seat approximately 200 guests and features:

    • Access similar to The Plumeria Lounge (including Leihōkū Suites passengers)
    • Locally-inspired food and beverages
    • A signature local coffee experience
    • Full-service bar with specially crafted cocktails
    • Private workspaces
    • Artwork and installations by local artists

This will bring Hawaiian's premium ground experience in their home market to a level that competes with what American, United and Delta operate at their own hubs.

    Why This Matters

Hawaiian sits in a competitive position. They're the flag carrier of Hawaii and one of the strongest brands for travel between the US mainland and the Pacific. But their premium cabin product has trailed both Asian carriers (JAL, ANA, Cathay Pacific, Singapore) and US legacy carriers (Delta One, Polaris).

The Leihōkū Suites announcement puts Alaska/Hawaiian in the premium cabin conversation for the first time in a meaningful way. Hawaiian is positioning itself as a premium option for Pacific travel - not just a leisure-focused carrier for locals and people visiting Hawaii.

    For AAdvantage and oneworld Members

Both Hawaiian and Alaska are oneworld members, which means award redemptions on Leihōkū Suites should theoretically be available to AAdvantage, JAL, Qatar, and other oneworld program members.

For anyone with AAdvantage miles targeting the Pacific, Leihōkū Suites should offer a new premium redemption option for Honolulu-based routings. Whether the pricing is competitive with JAL, Qantas, or Cathay Pacific options remains to be seen once award inventory launches.

    Timeline and Rollout

The refresh begins in 2028 and rolls out across all 24 A330 aircraft over time. Full fleet completion timeline hasn't been specified, but a fleet-wide interior refresh typically takes 2-3 years to complete once it starts.

That's a long runway. But for anyone planning aspirational Pacific travel over the next few years, Hawaiian's product will look meaningfully different by the time you fly it in 2028 or beyond.

    Bottom Line

Hawaiian just elevated their game. The Leihōkū Suites reflect a real investment in premium cabin experience that matches what the best carriers in Asia offer. Combined with the full cabin refresh, Premium Reserve introduction, new Honolulu lounge, and elevated dining program, this is the most significant Hawaiian product announcement in decades.

For Pacific travel - whether that's Hawaii vacation trips, Asia routings via Honolulu, or Oceania flights - Hawaiian just became much more competitive.
