Qatar Airways Doha Stopover: How It Works

Qatar Airways runs two separate Doha stopover programs. One is free, the other offers 4- and 5-star hotels from $14 a night. Here's what they are, who qualifies, and how to actually book.

If you've ever flown Qatar Airways through Doha, you may have transited through Hamad International without giving Doha itself a second thought. If time permits, you're leaving real value on the table. Qatar runs two separate stopover programs that let you break up your transit with time in the city. One program provides a free hotel and one that offers heavily subsidized 4- and 5-star properties starting at $14 per night.

They're two different programs with different rules, and many people confuse the two. Here's the breakdown.

Program 1: STPC — The Free Hotel

STPC stands for Stopover for the Purpose of Connection. It's Qatar Airways' free transit hotel program, and it's designed for passengers whose regular itinerary has them stuck in Doha for a long connection.

What you get: Free hotel room in Doha, complimentary transfers between the airport and the hotel, free entry visa to Qatar, and meal vouchers. These properties can include both airside hotels or stays in Doha city itself.

Here's who qualifies:

• Transit time in Doha of 8-24 hours
• You must be taking the next available onward flight. This means you can't intentionally book a later connection to game the free hotel!
• Your fare class must qualify. Saver award tickets in all cabins do NOT qualify (that's Z fares in first, U fares in business, X fares in economy)
• The one-way fare must be at least $400 including carrier-imposed surcharges

Qualifying fare classes:

• First class: R and A fares
• Business class: J, C, D, I, and R fares
• Economy class: N fares and above

If your itinerary matches those criteria, you're eligible for a free night in Doha as part of your existing ticket. The hotel is typically a 3-star or 4-star property in or near Doha assigned by Qatar rather than chosen by you.

How to book: If you're booking more than 72 hours in advance, request STPC online at qatarairways.com. If you're booking within 72 hours of departure, you'll need to arrange it at the airport upon arrival in Doha.

Program 2: Qatar Stopover — The Paid (But Heavily Subsidized) Version

The Qatar Stopover program is the more flexible, paid option. It's run by Discover Qatar, Qatar Airways' travel subsidiary, and it lets you specifically book time in Doha as part of a longer transit.

What you get: 4- and 5-star hotel packages at heavily subsidized rates. The same hotel that would cost $180-250 per night booked independently is available through the program starting at $14 per night, per person, based on double occupancy. Qatar Tourism subsidizes the rates to encourage stopover tourism.

Here's who qualifies:

• Confirmed Qatar Airways ticket holders with a Doha transit of 12-96 hours
• Code-share ticket holders
• As of 2026, oneworld alliance members flying on codeshare tickets are also eligible
• Stays are permitted up to 4 nights per direction, with a maximum of 2 bookings per ticket (one outbound, one return)

How to book: Book your Qatar Airways flight first. Then visit discoverqatar.qa with your booking reference number to select your hotel tier and add optional excursions like airport transfers, desert safaris, or Souq Waqif visits. Refundable if cancelled more than 72 hours before your arrival.

The catch: Rates are per person, per night, based on two adults sharing a room. That $14 rate is the entry point as actual pricing changes with hotel tier and season. But even at higher rates, the value versus booking directly is significant.

Which Program Should You Use?

Use STPC if: Your existing itinerary has an 8-24 hour transit in Doha and your fare class qualifies. Free is better than $14.

Use the paid Qatar Stopover if: You want to deliberately spend more time in Doha, you have longer than 24 hours, or your fare class doesn't qualify for STPC. The economics still work in your favor.

What's interesting is that the two programs aren't mutually exclusive. With a qualifying itinerary, you could theoretically use STPC on one direction and the paid Stopover on the other.

Why This Is Worth Knowing

Doha isn't a city that gets talked about much among aspirational travel destinations, but it's well worth a visit. The Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif, the National Museum of Qatar, and the modern skyline along the Corniche are all worth seeing. It's even easier combined with the fact that over 100 nationalities can enter Qatar visa-free for up to 30 days.

Qatar isn't alone. Emirates has a similar program in Dubai. Turkish Airlines runs one in Istanbul. And Etihad has one in Abu Dhabi. These are great benefits that have been around for years but are often underused by passengers.

Next time you're booking Qatar Airways through Doha, look at your layover time before checkout. If you have flexibility, extending it to 12+ hours and adding a stopover, or leveraging a free stopover hotel, is an amazingly affordable way to extend your trip.
