United Just Raised Elite Status Thresholds for 2027. Will the Rest to Follow?
United drops the PQF route for 2027 Premier status. 1K rises to 32K PQP; Silver-Platinum need 6K-18K PQP only. Here's what's changing.
United Airlines announced it is eliminating the combined flights + points qualification route and raising the Premier 1K target starting in 2027.. We could see similar moves from Delta and American in the coming months - history suggests these changes travel together.
United Airlines announced significant changes to its MileagePlus Premier status qualification requirements for 2027. The headline: the combined PQF + PQP qualification route is going away, so Premier Qualifying Point (PQP) requirements go up for anyone who qualified through segments, and the PQP-only 1K target rises from 28,000 to 32,000. On top of that, United is removing the PQF (Premier Qualifying Flight) segment requirement in favor of a flat 4-flight minimum, and introducing dynamic pricing for PlusPoints upgrades.
For anyone chasing United elite status, this changes the math. For members of other airline programs, it could be a preview of what’s coming.

The New Thresholds
Here’s the full breakdown of the new 2027 PQP requirements:
| Status Tier | 2026 PQF + PQP Route | 2026 PQP-Only Route | 2027 (PQP Only + 4 Flights) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premier Silver | 12 PQF + 5,000 PQP | 6,000 PQP | 6,000 PQP | +20% (PQF route) / no change (PQP-only) |
| Premier Gold | 24 PQF + 10,000 PQP | 12,000 PQP | 12,000 PQP | +20% (PQF route) / no change (PQP-only) |
| Premier Platinum | 36 PQF + 15,000 PQP | 18,000 PQP | 18,000 PQP | +20% (PQF route) / no change (PQP-only) |
| Premier 1K | 54 PQF + 22,000 PQP | 28,000 PQP | 32,000 PQP | +45.5% (PQF route) / +14% (PQP-only) |
For members who qualified through the segment (PQF) route, a 20% increase across most tiers is significant. For a Premier Gold member who’s been comfortably hitting their 10,000 PQP target each year, that same travel pattern now gets them only 83% of the way to maintaining status. While it may not sound like much on paper, it means an extra ~$2,000 in PQP-eligible spending.
Each dollar you spend on United airfare (minus taxes) equals one PQP, so the thresholds translate directly to spending requirements. Hitting Premier 1K now requires roughly $32,000 in United airfare per year compared to $28,000 previously.
The 4-Flight Minimum Replaces PQF
One positive is that United is removing the Premier Qualifying Flight (PQF) segment requirement entirely. It is replaced with a simpler requirement: you must take at least four United or United Express flights in 2027. The catch: the PQF route came with lower PQP targets, so dropping it means segment-based qualifiers now need more PQP.
Credit Card Starter PQP for 2027
Members with eligible United credit cards by December 31, 2026 will receive “Starter PQP” that count toward 2027 qualification. It works out to a 5% headstart towards the PQP needed for their current status level:
| Status Tier | Starter PQP |
|---|---|
| Premier Silver | 300 PQP |
| Premier Gold | 600 PQP |
| Premier Platinum | 900 PQP |
| Premier 1K | 1,600 PQP |
Dynamic PlusPoints Pricing
Another important update is that starting February 1, 2027, the number of PlusPoints required for upgrades will vary based on demand and available seats. This mirrors the broader trend toward dynamic pricing on everything that was previously fixed. First they came for our award redemptions and now they’ve come for upgrades…
What this means: popular routes and dates will cost more PlusPoints while less popular routes and dates will cost less. The past fixed rates are gone.

The Pattern Across US Airlines
Here’s where it gets interesting from a bigger-picture perspective.
Among US domestic airlines, major changes tend to travel together. One airline introduces basic economy, the others follow. One airline moves to spend-based qualification, the others follow. And so on.
Delta has historically been the aggressive leader on monetizing loyalty, including controversial threshold changes announced in 2023 that generated significant customer backlash. American has been more measured but has also quietly tightened various status qualification mechanics.
Given this historical pattern, we could see similar announcements from Delta and American over the coming months. Specifically:
- Delta: May increase Medallion Qualifying Dollars thresholds for 2027
- American: May increase Loyalty Point thresholds for status qualification
Of course this remains to be seen.
Why Now
Post-COVID travel demand has been elevated, particularly in premium cabins. With elite status loads also higher as travel recovered, airlines have been looking for ways to recalibrate the equation.
A few drivers:
- Status crowding. Lounges, upgrade priority, and other elite benefits function best with a certain density of status members. If too many people have status, the benefits dilute. Just take it form anyone who has been number 60 on an upgrade list.
- Spend shifts. Credit card partnerships and co-branded earning have become increasingly important. Making status more directly tied to spending (rather than flying) aligns with where airline revenue is actually coming from. Most US based airlines earn more from credit cards than actual flying.
- Premium demand strength. When premium cabins are consistently full of paid fares, there’s less need to use status upgrades to fill them. The old incentive to make status easier to reach matters less when premium is already selling at cash rates.
What This Means for United Members
- If you’re currently Premier Silver: The jump from 5,000 to 6,000 PQP is modest.
- If you’re currently Premier Gold: 10,000 to 12,000 PQP is a 20% increase.
- If you’re currently Premier Platinum: 15,000 to 18,000 PQP is also 20%. This can be big for someone who was comfortably hitting the previous threshold and will have a much larger gap to close.
- If you’re currently Premier 1K: 28,000 to 32,000 PQP is the hardest jump. If you’re a current 1K through flight activity, you may need to add significant additional travel or lean more heavily on credit card or alternative ways to earn PQPs.
My Take
This is one of the more bigger status qualification changes we’ve seen in recent years. 20% threshold increases across most tiers is substantial, and the introduction of dynamic PlusPoints pricing adds another layer to the announcement.
The real story is whether Delta and American will follow. Historical patterns strongly suggest they may. If you’re considering status qualification strategies for 2027, planning around likely threshold increases at the other two major carriers is probably wise.
The era of relatively easier airline status qualification may be ending.
