Hyatt gives you free night awards just for staying at different brands. Award stays count. Here's how Brand Explorer works and why it's worth chasing.

Hyatt hands out free night awards just for staying at different brands within their portfolio. Award stays count. It's one of the better perks in hotel loyalty space and most people don't take advantage of it.

World of Hyatt runs a program called Brand Explorer that gives members free night awards for staying at different Hyatt brands. Not different properties - different brands within the Hyatt portfolio. Stay at a Hyatt Regency, a Grand Hyatt, an Andaz, a JdV, and a Hyatt House on separate occasions, and you're building progress toward free nights.

I'm currently at 9 brands stayed after have earned my first Brand Explorer free night after my 5th brand stay. That means I'm one brand away from my next free night. It's a great program for incentivizing loyal customers to try other parts of your hotel portfolio, rather than defaulting to the same property type every trip.

    How Brand Explorer Actually Works

The mechanics are simple. World of Hyatt currently has around 30 brands across its portfolio and Brand Explorer rewards you for stays across them:

    Different brands stayed Reward
5 brands One Category 1-4 free night award
10 brands Another Category 1-4 free night award
    15 brands Another free night
Every 5 brands after Another free night

The free night awards are Category 1-4, which covers most Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, and plenty of mid-tier Hyatt properties globally. The realized value can range from $200-400 depending on the market and season.

    Award Stays Count

My favorite part of the promo is that award stays count toward Brand Explorer progress the same as paid stays.

That means every time you book a Hyatt award, you're not just spending points on a free stay. If it's at a new-to-you brand, you're also earning progress toward a Brand Explorer free night award. Almost all of my Brand Explorer credits have come from award stays, which effectively means my point redemptions have been double-dipping. I get the free night I book, plus incremental progress toward another free night award down the road.

    Why This Works Well

Most hotel loyalty programs reward you for concentrated behavior. Stay at the same brand 30 nights and you hit status. Spend $50,000 and you get an ambassador. Hyatt's Brand Explorer inverts that logic by rewarding you for trying new things.

It makes you a better traveler. Rather than defaulting to the same brand every trip, you start looking at what other Hyatt brands are in a destination. That's how I ended up trying JdV (Joie de Vivre) properties recently. I stayed a property that I would have skipped in favor of a Regency.

It rewards variety without punishing loyalty. You're not sacrificing status progress to earn Brand Explorer credits. Regular stays still count toward Explorist, Discoverist, or Globalist status.

Award nights work. The fact that award stays count is what makes Brand Explorer especially appealing. Every point redemption at a new brand is progress you're getting for essentially nothing beyond the strategic choice to try a different property.

    The Hyatt Brand Portfolio

To help visualize what "different brands" actually means, here's a partial list of what's currently part of the Hyatt portfolio and eligible for Brand Explorer:

Full-service and luxury: Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt, Hyatt Centric, Andaz, Thompson Hotels, Miraval Resorts

    Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha exterior

Boutique and lifestyle: JdV (Joie de Vivre), The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, Alila, Destination by Hyatt, Small Luxury Hotels

Select service and extended stay: Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Hyatt Studios, UrCove, Hyatt Ziva, Hyatt Zilara

All-inclusive: Impression by Secrets, Secrets Resorts & Spas, Dreams Resorts & Spas, Vivid Hotels, Zoëtry, Sunscape, Alua

Even a moderate traveler can hit 5 brands relatively quickly without going out of their way.

    The Strategy

If you're actively pursuing Brand Explorer credits, a few things to think about:

Check the brand before booking. When searching for a Hyatt in a new city, take a minute to see whether there's a brand you haven't stayed at yet. Sometimes it's the same points cost as the Hyatt Regency you'd default to, but at a Thompson or a Centric you'd be earning progress toward a future free night. Searching "Hyatt" in Google Maps won't show you all the properties - it's best to use the Hyatt site itself.

Award stays are your friend. As mentioned, award stays count towards your progress.

Track your progress. Log into your Hyatt account and check your Brand Explorer status. It shows which brands you've stayed at, and which to target next.

Consider the small brands. Hyatt has some very small brands with only a handful of properties globally. These aren't the low-hanging fruit by any means. Miraval, for example - three resorts total.

Why This Doesn't Get Talked About Enough

Brand Explorer is not a headline benefit. Hyatt doesn't advertise it aggressively the way they push their credit card partnerships. But for anyone who stays at Hyatt properties regularly, it's one of the more valuable perks offered.

I'm nine brands in, one free night earned, and I'm already thinking about which new brand to try on my next trip. That's exactly the behavior Hyatt designed the program to encourage, and it works because the reward has real value.

If you're a Hyatt member and haven't checked your Brand Explorer progress recently, give it a glance. You might be closer to a free night than you realize.
