La Valette Club at MLA: One of My Favorite European Lounges
La Valette Club Lounge at Malta International is one of my favorite European lounges - Priority Pass access, Maltese dishes, and a rare outdoor viewing deck.
La Valette Club at Malta International is a standout among European lounges I’ve visisted. Priority Pass access, a solid food spread with local Maltese dishes, and a rare outdoor viewing deck with great airfield views. It’s one of my favorite lounges and the perfect end to the Malta leg of the trip.

Not every European airport lounge is worth going out of your way for. La Valette Club at Malta International is one of the ones that is and after exploring it again on this trip, it has firmly earned a spot as one of my favorite lounges anywhere in Europe.
Here's what makes it stand out.

Getting In
Access to La Valette Club is available through several routes:
- Priority Pass (how I got in via my Chase Sapphire Reserve)
- Business or First Class tickets on participating airlines
- Paid entry for walk-ins (€35 or so per adult)
Access is just past security and requires taking an elevator up one floor. The entry process was smooth and the staff was welcoming. There have never been waitlists during my visits, which is a nice change from some of the busier credit card lounges I've been to this year. Based on how busy the main terminal gets, it’s a welcome refuge.

The Space
La Valette is split across two main indoor areas plus the outdoor terrace. The indoor space is comfortable without being cramped and offers a mix of seating options including proper dining tables, lounge seating, and some workspace areas. There is natural light throughout which is always a win.
What really distinguishes this lounge is the outdoor terrace. More on that in a moment.

The Food
The food spread is impressive for a lounge of this size and is notably better than what I was expecting at a smaller European airport. The selection included:
- A buffet with hot and cold items throughout the day
- Local Maltese dishes and specialties that give you a taste of the local cuisine
- A proper selection of cheeses, charcuterie, breads, and fresh fruit
- Pastries and desserts
- Hot entrees that rotated throughout the day
- A gelato cart
The Maltese dishes were a highlight. It's rare to find a lounge that leans into local cuisine rather than defaulting to safe international options. If you've been exploring Maltese food during your trip (and you absolutely should), La Valette Club gives you one more chance to try some local specialties before heading home.

There’s a self-serve bar as well, with Maltese and international wine options available.

The Outdoor Terrace
This is the standout feature. La Valette Club has an outdoor terrace that gives you views of the airfield while you wait for your flight. In an industry where almost every lounge has sealed itself off behind thick glass windows, finding one with an outdoor space is special.
The terrace isn't massive but it's well-designed. It offers proper seating, umbrellas for sun shade, and clean sightlines to the apron and taxiway. Watching aircraft come and go while enjoying a drink in the Mediterranean sun is the kind of experience most airport lounges can't match regardless of their indoor amenities.
For aviation enthusiasts specifically, this is worth the lounge visit alone. You can watch the ramp activity in a way that no indoor lounge allows. It is worth noting that this is also the smoking area, but since the space is quiet, that’s never been an issue for me personally.

Why It’s One of My Favorite Lounges
A few things make La Valette Club stand out:
- Local flavor done right. The Maltese dishes are a key part of the lounge's identity. It feels like a Maltese lounge rather than a generic European airport lounge that happens to be in Malta.
- The outdoor terrace. This cannot be overstated for AV Geeks. One fun catch this visit was a Finnair A350 off into the distance? Why? Interesting enough, some of AY’s fleet is serviced on the island.
- Reasonable size. It’s not so small that it feels cramped, but not so large that it loses the intimate feel. The space is right-sized for the airport.
- Priority Pass access. For members with Priority Pass through Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum, or similar credit cards, this is one of the better uses of the benefit. My card afforded me 2 guests, which meant I gladly paid for the 3rd in my party. In my opinion there aren’t many Priority Pass lounges that warrant that!
- Welcoming staff. Service was friendly throughout.
Final Thoughts
If you're flying through Malta International and have Priority Pass or any of the other access methods available to you, La Valette Club should be on your pre-flight itinerary. The combination of good food (with authentic local options), the outdoor terrace, and reasonable crowd levels makes this one of the more enjoyable European lounge experiences I've had.
This closes out the Malta portion of the trip. Next up is Rome before the long flight home.
