Wizz Air Snapshot: Rome to Malta and Back (W4 6218 / W4 6217)

A quick two-flight snapshot of Wizz Air between Rome and Malta on the Malta With Love trip. Bluetooth ordering that didn't quite work, seats that were better than expected, one lost bag, and an honest take on flying a European ULCC I hadn't tried before.

I don't always get to fly European ultra-low-cost carriers, but I enjoy the chance when I do out of pure curiosity. Of the European LCCs I've flown, I've been most impressed with Transavia (surprisingly comfortable) and least impressed with Ryanair (paying additional for biometrics after booking is a total scam - never again). Wizz Air was one of the remaining gaps in my ULCC checklist, so the FCO-MLA legs on this trip were a chance to try them out.

This is not a full flight review - just a snapshot of the two legs and my honest observations.

The Seats

Here's what surprised me - the seats were solid enough for this route. They were better than some of the other European LCCs I've flown. Legroom was acceptable, padding was reasonable, and the cabin itself felt cleaner and more modern than I expected. It also wasn’t plastered with dozens of advertisements like Wizzair’s peers. Wizz's fleet is younger than most legacy carriers, which shows.

Both legs were short, so I can't speak to how the seats would feel on a 4+ hour flight, but for the Rome-Malta hop it was a comfortable experience.

The Bluetooth Ordering System

Wizz has an interesting on-board ordering system. Rather than just the traditional cart service, they offer a bluetooth-based ordering system where you use your device to place an order before the crew comes out. 

It’s a novel idea but in practice, it didn't work on either of my legs. My order requests never made it to the crew. Not a huge deal since I didn't need to buy anything, but if you're relying on this system for food or drinks on a longer Wizz flight, expect that you might need to flag the crew directly.

No Wi-Fi (For Now)

No inflight Wi-Fi currently on Wizz Air aircraft. That's not surprising for a ULCC, but Wizz has announced they're adding Starlink to their fleet as part of the broader Indigo Partners rollout. Once that goes live, Wizz should have inflight connectivity that matches or beats what many legacy carriers offer. This will have a big impact on the passenger experience and is a nice surprise for a low cost carrier

The Lost Bag

One issue worth flagging: one of our bags didn't make it on the outbound. Wizz delivered it on the next day's flight, which was not ideal.

The honest takeaway from this: if you're checking bags on any airline - but especially ULCCs where irregular operations are more likely - throw an AirTag or similar tracker in your bag. It could have been worse of course - this flight was operated daily, but if it hadn’t, we may have been in for a longer wait.

The Verdict

Would I fly Wizz Air again? Yes. Both flights were on time, the seats were more comfortable than expected, and the cabin was clean and modern. It's a no-frills operation and it's honest about that, which I respect.

The bluetooth ordering system is a nice idea that needs work. The lost bag was an inconvenience but recovered within 24 hours. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to book Wizzair again if the price and schedule were right.

Both flights also delivered great views of the Mediterranean, which is one of the underrated perks of routing FCO-MLA. Even a no-frills ULCC hop can be scenic!
