Finnair AY 1763 HEL–FCO intra-European business class review - a blocked middle seat, mushroom truffle pasta, and a smooth 3.5 hour flight into Rome.
A 3.5 hour Finnair intra-European business class hop from Helsinki to Rome. Europen style business class with a blocked middle seats, a proper hot meal with mushroom truffle pasta, and Finnair's usual attention to the details. Fourth stop of the Malta With Love series.

Boarding
Gate 25 was crowded by the time we arrived, but the boarding process was smooth. Our inbound aircraft from Milan came in slightly late but Finnair turned it quickly. Boarding was via E-gates, something a little less common in the United States.
Our aircraft was OH-LZH, a 12-year-old A321.
The Seat and Cabin
European short-haul business class works differently from what most US flyers are used to. It's not a separate seating product - it’s usually a flex cabin that offers economy seating with the middle seat blocked. The seat itself is basically what everyone in economy has. The value comes from a little added space, elevated service, and a meal service.
Here’s an interesting Finnair detail: unlike BA and some other European carriers, there's no fixed tray table in the middle seat. Our flight had 5 rows blocked off as business class. Flexible, and probably a smarter operational approach than committing to a fixed number of BC seats regardless of a route’s demand.
The bulkhead legroom was fine. Not exceptional, but comfortable. The rows behind the bulkhead have legroom closer to standard economy, so if you have a choice, the bulkhead is worth considering.
Each seat we had a bottle of water and a blanket waiting.
Departure
Boarding finished about 10 minutes early. We pushed back on time for the 3.5 hour flight to Rome. After a quick 10 minute taxi we were airborne almost immediately.
Service
Service began with a hot towel followed by pretzels and a choice of beverage. Finnair serves their beverages in proper Finnish glassware even on short-haul business class. Small details like that are a nice touch on a 3 hour hop.
About an hour into the flight, hot meal service. Options were:
-Chicken
-Beef patty
-Mushroom truffle pasta
All entrees came with a small side of salmon breadcrumbs with caviar, a selection of warm bread, and a passion fruit mousse for dessert.
I opted for the Mushroom Truffle pasta was quite good. Well-seasoned, the truffle came through, and the portion was perfect. This is the thing about European carriers - even on a flight that would only get you a bag of pretzels on a US domestic route, Finnair serves a real hot meal.
IFE and Wi-Fi
This aircraft offered no seatback screens, which is standard for narrowbody European short-haul. Wi-Fi was available for purchase, with free texting for Finnair loyalty program members. Business class passengers received 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi by entering their name and seat number.
Arrival
As we hit the last 30 minutes of the flight, the crew made a final pass through the cabin offering Karl Fazer Finnish chocolates. It was the same touch as the transatlantic AY 6 flight the day before, and an example of the local brand tie-ins that Finnair does well.
We touched down at FCO Runway 19L 20 minutes ahead of schedule. We had a short five minute taxi to Terminal 1.
Arriving in FCO was quite jarring compared to HEL - the crowds and added noise were apparent the moment we stepped off the jetbridge.
Final Thoughts
Finnair offers a solid intra-European business class experience. The blocked middle seat isn't what most US based fliers are used to but the meal, service, and small design touches like proper glassware make this a genuinely elevated inter-european business class product. We had a friendly crew, on-time performance, and a well-done meal. The 3.5 hours went quickly.
